I refer to your advertisement posted on the website JobsDB.com on August 31st, 2009 (Job Reference Number: 12R/R/290809/01) on the position of Research Officer in the field of Radio Frequency and Antenna Design.

I am a fresh graduate with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with 1st Class Honors degree from National University of Singapore, with Telecommunications as my specialization track. Thus, I am well equipped and confident with hands-on skills and knowledge in the field of radio frequency and antenna design through courses that I had taken in university. In addition, I am proficient in several computer programming languages such as C, C++ and MATLAB. Moreover, I am also very familiar with softwares used in electrical engineering, such as LabVIEW, PSPICE and OrCAD.

Besides having all relevant skills and knowledge, I am regarded as committed and focused overachiever, as well as a quick learner by peers and mentors. Furthermore, I am capable of working independently, as shown in the intensive training I had received in university. In addition, I am a proven team player and have no problem mixing around with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Resolving Interpersonal Conflicts

I don’t like conflicts. One of the reasons why I’m quiet most of the time is: I don’t want to get into interpersonal conflicts. However, from my own experience, even the silence may cause conflicts.

Let me share one very sensitive hypothetical situation.

Jane Doe has been good friend with John Doer for more than 4 decades. Now, Jane has severe financial problem and after a week of consideration, she wants to borrow some money from John, who is known as the richest man in Doers Town. However, John rejected to give a helping hand, saying that he has no immediate cash in hand.

Jane is deeply hurt by the fact that John rejected her request for help when he had been generously lending money to other people for past 5 decades and it was her first time asking for help. She then starts to avoid John.

The truth is that due to recent economic downfall, John was also suffering from severe financial problem. The price of his stocks dropped by 99.9% and his business was on the verge of bankruptcy. He had not been able to pay his workers for 2 months now and they have gone into strike. He does not want to let anyone else know about this problem as it might drag his pride down

Here’s a question: How should they resolve this problem so that their relationship can return to normal?

Why effective communication skills are important.

Communication is an inevitable process, especially in modern society where personal, social, and organizational boundaries are disappearing. Without communicating with environment, one may not be able to survive in this highly competitive world. As “only the fittest survives”, at the end of the story, only people who are equipped with most effective communication skills are the ones who climb up to the top of hierarchy, while people with no communication skills in whatsoever areas will just be annihilated.

Importance of communication can be shown in other areas apart from hierarchy as well. With effective communication skill, one may use less resource than required. People with better communication skill will be able to transfer his thoughts, ideas, emotion better and more effectively, which may in return enable them to save time and other means of resource that were required during the communication.

Moreover, effective communication skill may also allow people to deepen their relationship with each other. One may give feedback to another while they are listening, and the speaker may know the emotions that the listener is feeling. In this process, a speaker with effective communication skill will not talk in a way which might offend the listener. This method may at the same time let both speaker and listener know each other better, and thus, extending their relationship further.

Those were the reasons why I think the effective communication skills are important to not only me, but to everyone. I hope that I could acquire the skills that are taught in ES2007S module and fully utilize them so that I can be a successful communicator.
